KWSG Reaffirms Commitment to Expanding Access to Family Planning Services

The Kwara State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to expanding access to quality family planning information and services as part of efforts to improve maternal and child health, as well as promote healthier families across the state.

The Commissioner for Health, Dr Amina Ahmed El-Imam, stated this during a high level stakeholders meeting organized by Kwara State Ministry of Health in commemoration of the 2026 World Contraception Day, held at Silver Gate Hotel, Ilorin, with the theme, “A Choice for All.”

Dr El-Imam said family planning remained critical to promoting healthy birth spacing, reducing preventable maternal and infant complications, and enabling individuals and couples to make informed decisions about their reproductive health.

She stressed the need to ensure that family planning services were available, accessible, affordable and provided with dignity, privacy and respect, noting that achieving these objectives required sustained commitment and collaboration among government, development partners, healthcare providers, traditional and religious leaders, civil society organisations and communities.

The Commissioner commended development partners and implementing organisations for their continued support to family planning services in the state, while appreciating healthcare workers for their dedication to providing essential reproductive health services.

She also urged traditional and religious leaders to continue supporting accurate health information and constructive community engagement on family planning, adding that the commemoration provided an opportunity to address concerns and identify practical measures to strengthen service delivery.

Speaking on behalf of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Dr Homsuk Swomen, said the organisation remained committed to supporting Kwara State in addressing barriers to family planning, particularly among adolescents and young people.

Dr Swomen explained that UNFPA was supporting states through its Match Funding initiative, under which contributions by participating state governments towards family planning commodities are matched with an equivalent quantity of commodities by UNFPA.

He commended Kwara State Government for its commitment to commodity security and called for renewed efforts to ensure that women, girls and young people could make informed and voluntary decisions about their reproductive health.

The Family Planning Coordinator, Kwara State Ministry of Health, Mrs Bashirat Jatto, disclosed that the state had commenced the training of healthcare workers on the newly introduced hormonal intrauterine device (IUD), expanding the range of family planning methods available to residents.

Mrs Jatto also highlighted improvements in the management and availability of family planning commodities through the Electronic Warehouse Management Information System .

She said the system had improved stock visibility and availability of consumption data enabling better inventory management and timely decision making.

The event featured a high level delegation from different walks of life, notably Royal Fathers, Medical Practitioners, Academics, Religious Leaders, Artisans, Implementing Partners and Civil Society Organizations among others.
