KWSPHCDA to Partner JSI on Routine Immunisation, Polio Eradication

The Kwara State Primary Health Care Development Agency (KWSPHCDA) is set to partner the JSI Research and Training Institute, Inc. to strengthen routine immunisation and support the interruption of circulating Vaccine-Derived Poliovirus Type 2 (cVDPV2) transmission in the state.

The proposed partnership will focus particularly on reaching zero-dose and under-immunised children in hard-to-reach and high-risk communities, while supporting targeted vaccination activities in areas identified as being at risk of poliovirus transmission.

The development followed a courtesy visit by a delegation from JSI, led by its Country Director, Dr Olawale Durosimi-Etti, to the KWSPHCDA office in Ilorin on Thursday, where the organisation presented details of its proposed intervention.

Receiving the team, Executive Secretary KWSPHCDA, Prof Nusirat Elelu appreciated the organisation for what she described as a timely intervention, particularly at a period when strengthening routine immunization and sustaining gains in polio eradication remain priorities.

The Executive Secretary who was represented by Director, Primary Health Care Systems, Dr Michael Oguntoye, commended JSI for its previous support to the state, particularly its intervention in the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination programme in 2024, noting that the organisation’s decision to return to support routine immunization and polio vaccination further demonstrated its commitment to improving health outcomes in Kwara State.

She, however, pledged the full support of KWSPHCDA towards the successful implementation of the proposed intervention, particularly in providing the necessary personnel and relevant data and information required for effective planning and execution.

In his remarks, the Country Director of JSI, Dr Olawale Durosimi-Etti, appreciated the KWSPHCDA team for the warm reception and expressed the organisation’s readiness to once again support the state’s immunization efforts.

Dr Durosimi-Etti said JSI was returning to Kwara to contribute to strengthening the state’s immunization programme and support efforts towards achieving better health indices.

During the meeting, the JSI team presented an overview of its proposed support, designed to complement the ongoing efforts of the Kwara State Government and its partners towards improving immunization coverage and protecting children against vaccine-preventable diseases.

According to the presentation, JSI currently provides technical assistance and operational support for routine immunization service delivery in nine states across Nigeria and is proposing to extend the support to Kwara State.

The proposed intervention will focus on two major areas: strengthening routine immunization services in hard-to-reach and high-risk areas, with emphasis on reaching zero-dose and under-immunized children, as well as supporting the interruption of poliovirus transmission through opportunistic vaccination with the novel Oral Polio Vaccine Type 2 (nOPV2) in identified high-risk locations.

The team explained that the proposed activities would be guided by available data from KWSPHCDA, with technical assistance and operational support provided to improve immunization service delivery.

The engagement also provided an opportunity for both organisations to discuss areas of collaboration, implementation requirements and the support needed from the state to facilitate the proposed intervention.

Also at the meeting were the Director, Personnel, Finance and Supply, Mr Ajide Olayioye; Director, Community Health Services, Mrs Rukayat Alabi; State Routine Immunization Officer, Dr Nurudeen Adana; State Social Mobilization Officer, Dr Dupe Shittu; and JSI Senior Immunization Technical Advisor, Dr Kazeem Ayankola.

JSI Research and Training Institute, Inc. is a global public health non-profit organisation that works with governments, communities and other partners to strengthen health and education systems and improve health outcomes.
