Kwara, VisionSpring Mark World Sight Day with Free Eye Screening, Eyeglasses Distribution

The Kwara State Government, in collaboration with VisionSpring, has organised a free eye screening and eyeglasses distribution exercise as part of activities to commemorate the 2026 World Sight Day.

The outreach, organised by the Kwara State Primary Health Care Development Agency (KWSPHCDA) in partnership with VisionSpring, was on Thursday held at the Primary Health Care Centre, Oko Erin, Ilorin, under the theme, “Love Your Eyes.”

Flagging off the exercise, the Executive Secretary of KWSPHCDA, Professor Nusirat Elelu, said the initiative was part of the state government's ongoing efforts to improve access to essential eye care services and promote healthy vision among residents.
Prof. Elelu urged beneficiaries to prioritise their eye health by adopting proper eye care practices and seeking prompt medical attention whenever they experience eye-related problems.

She stressed that early detection and appropriate treatment of eye conditions were essential to preventing avoidable visual impairment and preserving good vision.

The Executive Secretary also advised beneficiaries to handle and maintain the eyeglasses provided with care to ensure their durability and continued usefulness.

She encouraged them to use the glasses as prescribed and take advantage of available eye care services whenever necessary.

She further emphasised the importance of sustained public awareness and community participation in promoting eye health, noting that access to eye screening and corrective eyeglasses could significantly improve people's quality of life, productivity and general well-being.

The VisionSpring team, led by its Global Project Manager, Mr Mohammed Sharoz Jalil, alongside the Programme Manager, Mr Sa’ad Koki, joined other stakeholders in supporting the successful implementation of the outreach.

The State Director of the National Orientation Agency (NOA), Mallam Yakubu Ibrahim, also participated in the exercise. The agency supported community sensitisation and mobilisation through its Community Orientation and Mobilisation Officers.

The officers moved around the community to raise awareness and encourage residents to take advantage of the free eye screening and eyeglasses offered through the partnership between VisionSpring and the Kwara State Government.

The community mobilisation component was designed to ensure that residents were adequately informed about the availability of the services and encouraged to prioritise their eye health.

Following the outreach, the delegation paid a courtesy visit to the Deputy Governor of Kwara State, Mr Kayode Alabi, on Friday, where he expressed the state government's profound appreciation to VisionSpring for its invaluable support and commendable efforts towards improving the well-being of the people of Kwara State.

The Deputy Governor commended the partnership for helping residents access essential eye care services and corrective eyeglasses. He noted that good vision was vital to individual well-being, productivity and an improved quality of life.

He also expressed the government's gratitude for VisionSpring's continued support and interventions aimed at ensuring that more residents of Kwara State could see well and, in turn, do well.
