AbdulRazaq’s Financial Discipline, Workers’ Welfare Drive Transforming Kwara —Dr. Hauwa Nuru
The Commissioner for Finance, Kwara State, Dr. Hauwa Nuru, has highlighted the commitment of the administration of Governor Mallam AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, CON, to prudent financial management, transparency, accountability and improved welfare of citizens since assuming office in 2019.
Dr. Nuru stated this while receiving an Award of Excellence from the Adeta Primary School Old Pupils Association, in recognition of her contributions to education and support for the association’s community development initiatives.
According to the Commissioner, Governor AbdulRazaq, from the beginning of his administration, made sound financial management, transparency and accountability key priorities, with a deliberate commitment to ensuring that the State’s resources are responsibly managed and deployed for the benefit of the people.
She explained that the administration has consistently demonstrated that fiscal responsibility must ultimately translate into better welfare, improved public services and a higher quality of life for citizens.
Dr. Nuru noted that workers’ welfare remains a major priority of the administration, stressing that salaries and pensions are being paid as and when due, while inherited salary and pension liabilities have long been fully cleared.
She added that the government has also continued to address outstanding gratuity obligations, with over ₦30 billion already committed and paid towards the settlement of outstanding gratuities.
According to her, the sustained payment of gratuities reflects the administration’s determination to responsibly address inherited liabilities while maintaining regular payment of current salaries and pensions and funding other critical government priorities.
The Commissioner further highlighted the administration’s efforts to improve workers’ welfare through successive increases in the minimum wage, from ₦18,000 to ₦30,000 and subsequently to ₦70,000, alongside consequential adjustments.
She also noted the implementation of a 30 per cent peculiar allowance for State workers, describing the measure as part of the government’s broader efforts to strengthen workers’ purchasing power and improve their welfare.
Dr. Nuru emphasised the administration’s commitment to motivating teachers and improving educational outcomes across the State.
She disclosed that Governor AbdulRazaq recently presented award prizes worth about ₦120 million to outstanding teachers, head teachers and principals of basic and post-basic public and private schools across Kwara State.
She said the initiative was designed to recognise excellence, motivate professionals in the education sector and encourage improved performance in the sector.
The Commissioner also disclosed that the administration continues to support pupils and students from less-privileged backgrounds.
She noted that, in addition to supporting the provision of school uniforms, she has personally supported disadvantaged pupils with school books, sandals and so on, ensuring that children from vulnerable backgrounds have essential materials needed to attend school with dignity and confidence.
Dr. Nuru also highlighted significant interventions in the health sector, noting that the government has implemented 100 per cent CONMESS and CONHESS for eligible health professionals.
She explained that the measure is aimed at attracting, retaining and motivating skilled health personnel, while strengthening the State’s capacity to provide quality healthcare services to its citizens.
According to her, the administration’s approach demonstrates that effective financial management is not simply about balancing figures but about ensuring that public resources produce measurable improvements in the lives of citizens.
Dr. Nuru expressed appreciation to the Adeta Primary School Old Pupils Association for the honour, describing the award as a source of encouragement to continue supporting initiatives that positively impact the lives of citizens, particularly children and vulnerable members of society.
Earlier, the Chairman of the Adeta Primary School Old Pupils Association, Mallam Ibrahim Shehu Hammad, expressed profound gratitude to Dr. Nuru for her generosity and support for the association’s development initiatives.
Mallam Hammad particularly appreciated the Commissioner for supporting the association with school uniforms for the less-privileged pupils of Adeta Primary School.
He described the gesture as a demonstration of Dr. Nuru’s commitment to education and her concern for the welfare of children from disadvantaged backgrounds.
He prayed Almighty Allah to continue to guide and strengthen Dr. Nuru in her endeavours, while expressing confidence that the association would continue to benefit from her support for its future projects.
Highlight of the event was the presentation of the association's Most Outstanding Award to the Commissioner for Finance, Dr. Hauwa Nuru, in recognition of her exemplary leadership, support for education and commitment to community development.
