SPIN: KWSG Reaffirms Support for Duku Lade Irrigation Scheme

‎
The ‎Kwara State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to the successful implementation and sustainability of the Duku Lade Irrigation Scheme under the Sustainable Power and Irrigation Project for Nigeria (SPIN).
‎
The Commissioner for Water Resources, Hon. Usman Yunusa Lade, stated this recently at a stakeholders’ engagement meeting with the SPIN team from Abuja and representatives of the Duku-Lade community in Patigi Local Government Area, held at the Ministry’s Conference Room in Ilorin.
‎
‎The Commissioner, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary, Mrs. Christiana Omolola Asonibare, said that the presence and participation of members of the Duku Lade community was a demonstration of their readiness to support the project and contribute to its success, explaining that the constitution of the Grievance Redress Mechanism Committee (GRM) for the programme will enhance unity and progress of the project.
‎
‎Speaking during the exercise, the SPIN Environmental Specialist from Abuja, Engr. Oyebankole Agbelusi, stated that the stakeholders engagement was meant to constitute a SPIN Grievance Redress Mechanism Committee (GRC) at the grassroot that will provide a structured process through which beneficiaries, workers and other stakeholders could raise concerns, complaints, enquiries and suggestions arising from the implementation of the project.
‎
Engr. ‎Agbelusi stressed that the mechanism would also ensure that such concerns receive timely attention and appropriate responses, reiterating that this will strengthen collaboration between the project implementers, government and the benefiting community.
‎
‎The Environmental Specialist highlighted that the project was designed to ensure that farmers have access to water for irrigation across different seasons, adding that the initiative was also aimed at establishing a functional system to ensure that the Duku Lade Irrigation Scheme was properly implemented and sustained for the benefit of the farmers and the wider community.
‎
Responding on behalf of the community, the Chairman of the Water Users Association (WUA), Mr. Mohammed Kitabu, expressed the readiness and commitment of his members to the successful implementation of the project, while appreciating the Federal and State Governments as well as the World Bank, for selecting Duku-Lade for the irrigation intervention project.
