KWEPA Seals Land Converted to Illegal Dumpsite, Hideout for Miscreants

The Kwara State Environmental Protection Agency (KWEPA) has sealed off a parcel of vacant land unlawfully turned into an illegal dumpsite and hideout for miscreants in Mandate Estate Area, Adewole, Ilorin.

The operation, carried out by the KWEPA Task Force on Environmental Offences, took place on Monday, following intelligence reports and complaints from concerned residents in the area.

According to the General Manager of KWEPA, Hon. Jide Aina,  represented by the Head of the Team, Alh. Yinusa Jidah, said, the land, which was originally meant for development, had been converted into a refuse dumping ground and hangout for hoodlums, posing serious environmental and security risks to the surrounding community.

“The Agency will not tolerate any act that threatens public health, safety, and the integrity of our environment. The indiscriminate dumping of waste not only pollutes the environment but also creates breeding grounds for diseases and criminal activities,” the General Manager said.

He added that the Agency had issued several warnings to those responsible for the illegal activity before the enforcement. He then reaffirmed KWEPA's commitment to promoting a clean, safe, and healthy environment in Kwara State and urged members of the public to make use of approved waste disposal channels and report any act of environmental abuse.

The Agency also warned property owners and developers to secure their vacant lands and ensure they are not used for unlawful purposes, stressing that defaulters will face the full weight of the law.
