Kwara Government Cracks Down on Street Begging, Social Vices

The Kwara State Government has taken a strict stance against street begging and other social vices, particularly in Ilorin metropolis where they are a growing menace, warning that street beggars and anyone that indulges in child hawking, street hawking and selling of intoxicating substances would be made to face the wrath of the law.

The Commissioner for Social Development, Dr. Mariam Nnafatima Imam, made this known recently during a familiarisation visit to the Committee on Business, Innovation, Industry, Women Affairs and Social Development at the Kwara State House of Assembly, Ilorin.

While decrying street begging and the security risks it poses, Dr. Imam disclosed that awareness will be created across the state on the penalties that await those caught in the act of begging. 

She noted that relevant stakeholders had been involved in the routine of the Ministry, adding that jingles will be aired in three major languages: English, Yoruba and Hausa, across the three Senatorial Districts of the state.

The Commissioner disclosed that the campaign will include multilingual radio jingles—broadcast in English, Yoruba, and Hausa—across all three senatorial districts to ensure widespread understanding and reach.

“Our goal is to reclaim public spaces, protect our children from abuse, and address the root causes of these societal challenges,” she stated. “Street begging is not only a public nuisance but a security threat that must be curbed through coordinated enforcement and advocacy.”

Chairman of the House Committee, Hon. Olushola Odetundun, commended the Ministry for its proactive approach. He warned that if not addressed, street begging could escalate into a broader security crisis.

Hon. Odetundun further urged the Ministry to keep the House informed of any challenges hindering its work, assuring the Assembly's support in ensuring the effectiveness of social intervention policies.
