Commissioner Visits KWCOED, Emphasizes Need for Harmonious Coexistence with KWASUED

In a significant move to foster collaboration and ensure seamless academic operations, the Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Hajia Sa’adatu Modibbo Kawu, on Tuesday paid an official visit to the Kwara State College of Education (KWCOED), Ilorin.

The visit was aimed at assessing modalities for the coexistence of the college with the newly established Kwara State University of Education (KWASUED), which currently shares facilities with the college.

During her visit, Hajia Modibbo Kawu reiterated the State government’s commitment to advancing education under Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq’s administration.

She described the establishment of KWASUED as a strategic initiative to enhance teacher education and meet the growing demand for qualified educators within the State and beyond.

Addressing the management of KWCOE, the Commissioner acknowledged their cooperation and willingness to share facilities with KWASUED.

She commended their commitment to maintaining a positive relationship with the new university and assured the management that their concerns, particularly regarding course accreditation, would be addressed promptly.

Hajia Modibbo Kawu noted that the government’s investment in education, including bailouts for tertiary institutions, improved staff welfare, the establishment of KWASUED, and the planned commissioning of the Ilesha Baruba campus of Kwara State University (KWASU), demonstrate its dedication to improving education. These initiatives, she said, are aimed at bringing quality education closer to the people and making it more accessible.

“I want to commend you for your cooperation and willingness to maintain a harmonious relationship with KWASUED, especially the assurances from your union leaders. Such collaboration is vital for the success of both institutions,” she said.

The Commissioner also praised the management and staff of KWASUED for embracing the opportunity to serve the State, acknowledging the challenges inherent in establishing a new institution.

She reaffirmed the government’s commitment to creating an enabling environment for the university’s growth and success.

In his welcome address, the Acting Provost of the College, Dr. Ayinde Shehu Jawondo, expressed gratitude to the Commissioner for the visit and acknowledged the government’s efforts in the prompt payment of salaries and continued support for the college.

He appealed for increased financial assistance to facilitate the college’s upcoming accreditation processes and the hosting of visiting panels.

Similarly, Comrade Yahaya Mohammed Ndaji, Chairman of the College of Education Academic Staff Union (COEASU), thanked the State government for settling six months of salary arrears owed by the previous administration, bailout for the tertiary education, prompt payment of salaries and welfare of their members.

Ndaji, however, reaffirmed the union’s support for the coexistence with KWASUED.
