L-PRES: Over 100 Livestock, Small Holder Farmers Benefit from Empowerment

Not fewer than one hundred livestock small holder farmers have benefited from the first phase of the goats empowerment programme donated by the major stakeholders in the livestock sector of the State.

The newly deployed Commissioner for Livestock Development, Mrs. Oloruntoyosi Thomas while performing the distribution exercise at the State coordination office of the livestock productivity and resilience support project (L-PRES) in Ilorin said the programme is part of the State government's strategy to grow the livestock sector by improving the income of the small holder farmers in the livestock business.

Mrs.Thomas who is the pioneer Commissioner for the newly created Ministry, pointed out that the capacity building training organised by the Kwara L-PRES Project has yielded positive result by changing the orientation of the youths to wealth creation and employment opportunities, adding that the State Governor, Mallam AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq is not only after the trainings but further wants everybody to have financial freedom with a view to improving their livelihood and the economic status of the State.
She said the beneficiaries who are members of the "Agbeloba Omodara" Cluster farming group deserved the gesture due to their contributions in stepping down the knowledge gained during the intensive training programmes to other people at the grassroot.

While congratulating the beneficiaries, the Commissioner reiterated the State government's commitment to supporting every livestock farmer in achieving their goals and transforming the livestock sector of the State.

Earlier, the State Project Coordinator, Mr. Olusoji Oyawoye disclosed that the small ruminant animals were donated by individuals in the State to encourage group members and support their livestock business.

Mr. Oyawoye who described livestock as a stock of wealth that can be disposed of in the time of emergency, added that the beneficiaries have been taught on how to integrate crop farming and livestock farming to reduce the cost of feeding the animals and maximise their profits.

Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, the Chairman of the "Agbeloba Omodara" Cooperative Farming Group, Mallam Shuaib Ajibola appreciated the State government, L-PRES project and the donors of the goats for fulfilling the promises made during the step-down training, assuring them of proper monitoring to ensure that the animals are well taken care of to serve the intended purpose.

In a related development, the Commissioner has inspected the ongoing livestock projects in the Akerebiata abattoir in Ilorin East Local Government Area of the State to have a first hand information about the government's facilities in the place.

The facilities inspected included; the newly constructed 60 tones solar powered cold storage facility for storing livestock products in the market, slaughter slab section, and water facilities, among others 

The commissioner and her team were also conducted round the market by the management and the executive members of the Kwara State butchers union.

Kwara State Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM) said applicants for the public school teaching jobs can now check the results of the CBT done earlier on Saturday.  TESCOM Chairman Mallam Bello Taoheed said all the applicants who sat the test can access their results on the portal.
