NUTRITION IS KEY TO HAVING ADEQUATE IMMUNITY - Lawal
The Project Manager, Accelerating Nutrition Results in Nigeria (ANRiN), Ministry of Health, Dr. Habeeb Lawal has appealed to all residents to pay special attention to the elderly in the society.
This was made known on Kwara Television during a Live Broadcast on 'Adequate Nutrition and Healthy Living' a programme anchored by the Ministry of Communications.
Dr. Lawal said as human being grows, most of the organs of the body get aged, as such old people are more proned to having infections, highlighting the problems associated with aging as dementia, reduction in appetite, low weight, among others.
He added that the stomach becomes shrink, making it difficult to contain significant food to provide the needed nutrition for the body, hence the elderly are admonished to look into their nutritional status by having at least five classes of food at each meal to ensure adequate nutrients to boost their immunity.
Speaking on the importance of water, The ANRiN Project Manager said the importance of water cannot be over emphasized as it helps to transport the injested food, aid digestion and regulate the body temperature and advised that people should drink water as many times as they feel like, noting that inadequate intake of water makes the urine yellowish and there is no hard and fast rules on the quantity of water to take per day.
