SAFETY ON KWARA HIGHWAYS: KWARTMA PARTNERS STAKEHOLDERS IN TRANSPORTATION, CALLS FOR SYNERGY

The Kwara State Road Traffic Management Authority (KWARTMA) had invited transport stakeholders in Kwara State to discuss ways forward on the spate of Road Traffic Crash (RTC), along our Highways with particular reference to Oko-olowo, Budo-oba axis of the State. 

While welcoming the Chairmen of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Road Transport Employee Association of Nigeria,(RTEAN), Tricycle Owners Association of Nigeria (TOAN) and Motorcycles Operators Union of Nigeria (MOUN), and one of the KWARTMA Special Traffic Mayors, the General Manager of Radio Kwara,Alhaji Kayode Aremu, who was represented by the Secretary of the Corporation, Mr. Onikoko Saliu Tajudeen, the Ag. CEO of the Authority, Engr. Bamidele Michael expressed concern on the incessant auto crash within the state from involving Tricycles and other crashes along Oko-olowo Budo-oba area.


Engr. Bamidele recommended side guide to be mounted by the left side of all tricycles so that passenger could alight from the right hand side for safety. He expressed happiness that the experience of the chairmen will assist KWARTMA to arrive at fruitful deliberation.

In the remark of the State Chairman, Road Transport Employee Association of Nigeria, Alhaji Abdulrahman Olayinka Onikijpa, he expressed bitterness on the inceasant loss of lives along Oko-olowo Budo-oba area and suggested construction of flyovers bridge on the highway against avoidable crashes. He also recommended training and enlightenment of the motorists and other road users on the need to be cautious on the highway.

 
In his own remark, Alhaji Saliu Gidado recommended speed breaker by Oloje / Alapa/ Oko-olowo junction to keep motorists abreast of the express Road.

Also in his remark, the the State Secretary of National Union of Road Transport Workers, Alhaji Aliu Yemi Rasheed requested for the presence of KWARTMA personnel at Oko-olowo road for improved enforcement.

While reacting to the contributions of the Chairmen, Engr. Bamidele Michael informed the gathering that the state Government is doing much to address the issue, he commended the Governor of Kwara State, Mallam Abdulrahman Abdulrasaq for providing the Authority with Ten brand new motorcycles part of which will be used for enforcement at Oko-olowo-Budo-oba Road.

It was also resolved at the meeting that Kwara State Road Traffic Management Authority and other stakeholders in the transportation sector will harmoniously work together for safety of lives and property along the road while embarking on vigorous enlightenment campaign all year round.
