LIPW ACTIVITIES: COMMISSIONER CHARGES CDOs TO BRACE UP

The Kwara State Commissioner for Environment, Mallam Shehu Ndanusa Usman has charged Community Development Officers (CDOs), supervising beneficiaries of the Labour Intensive Public Workfare (LIPW), under the Nigeria Covid-19 Action Recovery and Economic Stimulus (NG-CARES), in the 16 Local Government Areas of the state, to brace up and put in more efforts to achieve an appreciable level of success, for the scheme in the state.

The Commissioner gave the charge during a meeting with the Staff of Labour Intensive Public Workfare (LIPW) Delivery Platform and the CDOs across the 16 Local Government Areas, held at the conference room of the Ministry in Ilorin, the State Capital.

While commending the field officers for their contributions to the success story of the programme the previous year, the Commissioner, enjoined them to redouble their efforts, with the aim of surpassing their achievements of last year.

"The purpose of the scheme is to alleviate the sufferings of the poor and vulnerable, as a result of the incident of Covid-19 pandemic and also increase the standard of living of our people for economic development," the Commissioner stated.

commended the smooth working relationship existing between the staff of LIPW Delivery Platform and the CDOs, which he described as a good development for the progress of the NG-CARES programme in the state.

He however advised the CDOs to take proper charge by ensuring that beneficiaries work in accordance with the dictates of NG-CARES Project Implementation Manual, subjecting their activities in their respective communities to strict monitoring. 

The Commissioner equally reminded them that the principle of working for four hours in a day and 20 hours in a week should not be compromised. 

The CDOs were also reminded that the rules that beneficiaries should only work at any of the public utilities in their immediate communities is still in force and should be followed to the letter.

The Commissioner disclosed that, the Ministry will intensify monitoring of the programme across the 16 Local Government Areas, to ascertain the level of compliance on the part of the LIPW beneficiaries. 

He appreciated the Technical Head, LIPW Delivery Platform, Alhaji Shamsideen Aregbe, for the laudable achievements of the programme in the state, stressing the commitment of the present administration to continue to unfold programmes that will bring succour to the poor and vulnerable people in the state. 

Earlier, the Technical Head, Labour Intensive Public Workfare, Alhaji Shamsideen Aregbe had lauded the state government for engaging in various schemes and programmes, which have contributed immensely to the upliftment of the standard of living of the poor and vulnerable people in state. 

He said the LIPW scheme has changed the story of more than 6,000 poor and vulnerable individuals across the 16 Local Government Areas in the state, pointing out that some of the beneficiaries are people that could not afford three square meals before now but today, the scheme has taken them out of poverty and now living better and comfortable in in their various localities.

Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Hajia Afusat Ibrahim in her closing remarks, appreciated the Community Development Officers for attending the meeting and assured them that the Commissioner will address all the challenges mentioned in due course.

....In a related development, the Commissioner for Environment, Mallam Shehu Ndanusa Usman has charged youths in the state to join hands with the present administration in its bid to sustain a clean and hygienic environment, devoid of epidemics.

The Commissioner made the charge yesterday during a courtesy call on him by the Ilorin Emirate Youth Development Association (IEYDA), led by its National President, Alhaji Abdullahi Babatunde and Balogun Gambari Youth Movement led by AbdulRahman Okesuna.

According to him; "The present administration under the leadership of Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq is highly committed to effective and efficient waste management and ready to partner with any focussed and result oriented Community Development Association like you, in order to sustain a clean and hygienic environment for healthy living."

The Commissioner informed the visitors that he had intimated some Traditional rulers government's readiness to stop the indiscriminate dumping of refuse and encroachment on roads by marketers in the state. 

According to him, severe sanctions await environmental law violators, advising them to join the Ministry in sensitizing community and markets leaders, on the need to adhere strictly to environmental laws or face the full wrath of the law.

Mallam Ndanusa appreciated their visit and assuring them that issues raised will soon be addressed accordingly.

Earlier, the President, IEYDA, Alhaji Abdullahi Babatunde appreciated Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq for his efforts at sustaining clean and hygienic environment in the state. 

He called the attention of the Ministry to environmental challenges such as indiscriminate dumping of refuse, road encroachment and inadequate public toilet in the Ilorin metropolis. 

In his remarks, the President, Balogun Gambari Youth Movement, Alhaji AbdulRahman Okesuna thanked the Commissioner for the warm reception accorded them, reiterating their commitment to continue to support the present administration, in its bid to take Kwara to greater heights.

The National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Utman Jagunma also called on State Government to consider having a mini-garage for Keke Napep Operators at Oja-Oba, to allow free movement and avoid incessant accidents in the area.
