KWSG Inaugurates UN Food System Transformation Pathways Technical Committee

The Kwara State Government has formally inaugurated the United Nations "food systems transformation pathways" technical committee in the State.

The national "food systems transformation pathways" which is being domesticated in Kwara State is charged with the responsibility of reducing poverty, unemployment, hunger, food importation, and promotion of women empowerment in agriculture.

In his inaugural speech, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Planning and Economic Development, Dr Yakub Jaja disclosed that the national programme is domesticated in all the six geopolitical zones of the country. 

He said Kwara State is saddled with the responsibility of coordinating the programme in the north central states of the federation, adding that the competitive nature of the project required all hands to be on deck for the attainment of food security in the State. 

Dr Jaja explained that the domestication of the action plan for Kwara State are in three major areas which are: the promotion of homestead farming (operation feed your self), revitalization of farm estates and the promotion of school farming in both public and private schools.

According to him, the primary mandate of the committee is to enhance food production, reduction of food insecurity and the eradication of malnutrition and unemployment among youths and women in Kwara State. 

The Permanent Secretary disclosed that Kwara State would represent the north central states in Rome in July where the overall best food chain state will be recognized internationally.

He urged the technical committee to hit the ground running to deliver on their mandate of making Kwara State the food and agricultural hub of the nation.

Also speaking at the inaugural meeting, the Kwara State Director of Planning, Alhaji Surajudeen Alimi charged members of the committee to put in their best to make Kwara State victorious in the task ahead, adding that the Ministry would give the committee the necessary support to achieve the loafty goals of eradicating poverty and hunger in the State.
