KWSG to initiate a Building Control Agency to forestall building collapse

The Kwara State Governor, Mallam AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, has said that his administration plans to initiate the creation of a functioning building control agency that will inspect, approve and certify every stage of building construction in the state. 

He made the revelation at a One-day symposium tagged, "Building Control in Kwara State: A Synergy Between Government and Stakeholders," organized by the state  Ministry of Housing and Urban Development.

 Governor AbdulRazaq, who was  represented by the state Commissioner for Communications, Hon. Olabode George Towoju, stated that the rate at which buildings are collapsing in many states of the country is becoming alarming; hence, the  need  for an immediate and urgent attention. 

"There are growing concerns among the professionals and stakeholders in the building environment over the spate of buildings collapsing in the country. This issue has reached an alarming crescendo. 

On several occasions, it has led to unnecessary loss of lives and properties, thus becoming an issue of major concern since it poses a threat to the nation’s development. In fact, it has now become a familiar occurrence, even to laymen on the streets in Nigeria.

It is very important to understand that several cases of building collapse in the country are as a result of the unavailability of building control or poor implementations of the existing one. It is no longer a story, that the country is counting numbers of structures that were built in unacceptable ways of building every year, due to like of effective building control mechanisms," the governor said. 

Governor AbdulRazaq added that professionalism cannot be compromised while he also urged the public to always seek the services of relevant professionals before erecting any structure.

On his part, the Commissioner for Housing and Urban Development, Hon. Ibrahim Akaje, congratulated the participants of the Symposium for their foresight in finding solutions to building collapse, not just in Kwara State, but the country as a whole.

"In a nutshell, the symposium will prepare government officials, stakeholders and participants on building industries and preparation for sustainable safety now and in the future. 

"The Kwara State Ministry of Housing and Urban Development is not selfish but ready to share from the wealth of experience of stakeholders with others out there. Through this symposium, new ideas,that will position us into practising world class building techniques, will be generated," Akaje assured. 

The Speaker, Kwara State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Yakubu Danladi Salihu, who was represented by the Chairman, House Committee on Lands, Housing and Urban Development, Hon Felix Awodiji, promised that the state legislature would expidite action on any legislative action to drive the process.

Also present at the symposium were the Chairman of the Nigerian Institute of Architects, Arc. Olu Joseph ; Chairman of the Kwara Chapter of Nigerian Institute of Quantity Surveyors, Alh. AbdulRasheed Abdulkadir, CEO of Estate Code Nigeria Limited, Mallam Bashir Ademola Yusuf. 

Representatives from the Council for the Regulation of Engineering on Nigeria (COREN), Town Planners Registration Council of Nigeria ( TOPREC) , Nigerian Association of Technologists on Engineering, Nigerian Institute of Builders, amongst others, were also present.

KWASSIP Opens Application Portal for Kwapreneur 5.0

Common Entrance Materials: KWSG Directs JSS Principals, Headteachers of PPS To Report for Collection

The Kwara State Ministry of Education and Human Capital Development has directed all Principals of Junior Secondary Schools and Head-Teachers of all Public Primary Schools across the state to report at the Quality Assurance Bureau Zonal Offices in their area for the collection of Placement Examination (Common Entrance Examination) registration materials as from Monday 1st July, 2024.
