Kwara Govt Reaffirms Commitment to Health Workers’ Welfare

The Kwara State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to the welfare, professional development and wellbeing of medical doctors and other healthcare professionals in the state.

The Commissioner for Finance, Dr Hauwa Nuru, gave the assurance when the newly inaugurated executive of the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA), Kwara State Branch, paid her a courtesy visit at her office in Ilorin.

Dr Nuru said Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq’s administration places a high premium on the contributions of medical doctors and other health workers to the wellbeing and development of the state.

She stressed that their sacrifices and professional contributions are deeply valued.

The commissioner commended Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq for his continued support for the health sector and commitment to creating an enabling environment to attract, retain and motivate skilled medical professionals in Kwara.

According to her, the administration has taken significant steps to improve the welfare of health workers. These include implementing 100 percent CONMESS and CONHESS for eligible health-sector professionals.

She said the measure forms part of efforts to retain critical health workers and strengthen human resource capacity in the sector.

“We treasure what you do. You make our communities function. We recognise the critical role you play in keeping our people healthy and our communities productive,” Dr Nuru said.

She assured the NMA that the government would continue to give serious consideration to legitimate requests from health workers. She also urged the association to bring challenges affecting its members to the appropriate authorities for dialogue and constructive resolution.

The commissioner expressed the government’s readiness to support initiatives that promote professional development, capacity building and workforce retention in the health sector.

She added that the state had also commenced an internship programme for pharmacy graduates.

Dr Nuru further assured the NMA that the welfare of the entire workforce remains a priority of the AbdulRazaq administration.

She stressed that the state government does not owe salaries or allowances to medical doctors and other health workers, adding that all workers are paid their salaries as and when due.

She encouraged the NMA leadership to sustain constructive engagement with the government, noting that continuous dialogue remains essential to addressing emerging challenges and strengthening the state’s healthcare system.

Earlier, the Chairman of the NMA, Kwara State Branch, Dr Suleiman Jamiu, said the visit was primarily to formally introduce the newly inaugurated executive and strengthen the association’s relationship with the Ministry of Finance and the state government.

Dr Jamiu said the new executive had commenced engagements with relevant stakeholders as part of its commitment to improving the welfare of medical doctors and advancing the medical profession in Kwara.

He described the NMA as the collective voice of medical doctors in the state.

The NMA chairman appreciated Dr Nuru for her support, particularly her efforts in facilitating the remittance of deductions relating to members’ association dues.

Dr Jamiu also commended Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq for his continued support for medical practitioners and other health workers.

He particularly acknowledged the recent payment of the National Residency Training Fund (NRTF), which he described as an important intervention supporting doctors’ professional training and development.

Dr Jamiu pledged the association’s continued cooperation and constructive engagement with the state government in its efforts to improve healthcare delivery and strengthen the welfare of medical professionals.

The meeting reaffirmed the shared commitment of the Kwara State Government and the NMA to sustained dialogue, a stronger and better-motivated healthcare workforce, and improved healthcare services for the people of the state.
