KWSG Trains 44 Medical Laboratory Scientists on Malaria, TB Microscopy

The Kwara State Government has commenced the training of 44 Medical Laboratory Scientists (MLS) on malaria and tuberculosis microscopy to strengthen diagnostic capacity and improve healthcare delivery in the state.

The Commissioner for Health, Dr. Amina Ahmed El-Imam, disclosed this when she declared a 10-day training programme open in Ilorin at Peace Hotel. 

The Commissioner explained that the exercise become necessary described it as a critical step towards improving accurate diagnosis and saving lives.

Dr. El-Imam urged participants to take the training seriously and apply the knowledge acquired in their various places of work, stressing that laboratory personnel play a fundamental role in the diagnosis and treatment of patients.

She noted that misdiagnosis could result in unnecessary costs, prolonged illness and loss of lives, adding that the quality of information provided by laboratory scientists significantly influences clinical decisions.

The Commissioner also encouraged the participants to embrace quality assurance, continuous learning and knowledge sharing, enjoining them to see their profession as a mission and strive for excellence in their respective places of work.

Earlier, the Director of Public Health, Dr. Oluwatosin Fakayode, said the training was designed to build the capacity of Medical Laboratory Scientists in malaria and tuberculosis microscopy and improve the accuracy and reliability of laboratory diagnosis across the state.

The lead facilitator, Dr. Oladosu Oladipo of the ANDI Centre of Excellence for Malaria Diagnosis, University of Lagos, commended the Kwara State Government for its commitment to strengthening medical diagnosis, particularly in malaria and tuberculosis.

Dr. Oladipo urged the state to sustain the initiative by establishing a dedicated centre for malaria diagnosis, which he said would further enhance diagnostic services and capacity development.

The training is being conducted in two batches, with each batch undergoing 10 days of intensive theoretical and practical sessions in malaria and tuberculosis microscopy.

Kwara Govt Reaffirms Commitment to Health Workers’ Welfare
