Kwara Fadama-CARES Receives AFAN Leadership

The Kwara State Fadama-CARES, under the Nigeria Community Action for Resilience and Economic Stimulus (NG-CARES), has received the state chapter of the All Farmers’ Association of Nigeria (AFAN) in a move to deepen farmers’ participation in agricultural development across the state.

The meeting, which was held to introduce the new executive to Kwara Fadama-CARES and facilitate discussions on how members could benefit from the project’s interventions, provided a platform for both parties to discuss areas of mutual interest and explore practical ways of ensuring that farmers across the state derive maximum benefits from Kwara Fadama-CARES interventions.

Hosting the new AFAN executive in his office, the State Project Coordinator, Kwara Fadama-CARES, Engr. Dr Busari Toyin Isiaka, congratulated the new AFAN leadership on its inauguration and expressed the programme’s readiness to work with the association to achieve its objectives.

Busari charged the association to promote unity and cooperation with other agriculture-related organisations in pursuing farmers’ interests, urging it to collaborate with the State Federated Fadama Community Association.

The Coordinator praised Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq for his investment in agriculture, particularly the disbursement of agricultural inputs and assets to farmers to improve their livelihoods. He also urged the AFAN leadership to be present during the forthcoming disbursement of agricultural inputs and assets.

He noted that farmers are a major factor in the success of agricultural development programmes, emphasising that effective collaboration with farmers’ associations would facilitate better communication, enhance participation and ensure that interventions are more responsive to beneficiaries’ needs.

He disclosed that Kwara Fadama-CARES would maintain an open and productive relationship with the association, particularly in the areas of farmers’ mobilisation and sensitisation on project interventions.

Speaking earlier at the meeting, the Treasurer of the All Farmers’ Association of Nigeria, Engr. Funsho Afolayan, explained that AFAN serves as the umbrella body for 28 commodity organisations covering arable crops, livestock, trade crops and tree crops, each with its respective subgroups.

He disclosed the association’s intention to synergise with Kwara Fadama-CARES to ensure that agricultural dividends reach the grassroots, noting that the association’s structure cuts across the national, state, local government and ward levels.

Afolayan also outlined the association’s responsibilities, including serving as a link between farmers and government; advising government on agricultural policy and implementation; and supporting the training of farmers on climate-smart agricultural practices in response to climate change, among others.

Also present at the meeting were the Ex-Officio, Alhaji Isiaka Ahmed Alata; Alhaji Babatunde Abdulrahman; the State Organising Secretary, Alhaji Rasak Aiyeleso; and the Kwara Central Senatorial Chairman of AFAN, Alhaji Hammed Adebayo.
