World Environment Day 2026: KWEPA GM Advocates Innovative Waste Management For Climate Protection

The General Manager of the Kwara State Environmental Protection Agency (KWEPA), Hon. Jide Aina, has called for the adoption of sustainable and innovative waste management practices as a critical strategy for environmental protection and climate change mitigation.

Hon. Aina made the call while delivering a paper presentation at the 2026 World Environment Day programme organized by the Department of Environmental Management and Toxicology, Kwara State University (KWASU), Malete. 

The event was held under the theme: “Sustainability and Innovative Waste Management While Protecting the Climate.”

In his presentation, the General Manager emphasized that waste management had evolved beyond the traditional approach of refuse collection and disposal.

He stated that waste management had now become a key driver of environmental sustainability, public health protection, economic development, and climate action.

According to him, rapid urbanization, population growth, industrialization, and changing consumption patterns had significantly increased waste generation, while improper waste disposal practices continue to contribute to environmental degradation and climate change through the emission of greenhouse gases.

Hon. Aina further highlighted several innovative and sustainable approaches to waste management, including waste reduction at source, recycling and resource recovery.

The General Manager further said other approaches include; waste-to-wealth initiatives, circular economy practices, and the deployment of smart technologies to enhance efficiency in waste management systems.

He stressed that effective climate protection requires collective responsibility and active collaboration among governments, educational institutions, private organizations, communities, and individuals. 

He encouraged students of Environmental Management and Toxicology to utilize their knowledge, research, and innovation capabilities in developing practical solutions to emerging environmental challenges.

Reaffirming the Agency’s commitment, Hon. Aina stated that KWEPA will continue to prioritize environmental education, public sensitization, enforcement of environmental regulations, and the promotion of initiatives aimed at building a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable Kwara State.

In his remarks, the Head of the Department of Environmental Management and Toxicology, Kwara State University, Malete, Dr. Olalekan Oluwatoyosi Salam, commended KWEPA for its consistent environmental advocacy and commitment to promoting sustainable environmental practices across Kwara State. 

He urged students to remain dedicated to environmental protection and sustainability initiatives.

In his goodwill message, the Quality Assurance Manager of Seven-Up Bottling Company, Ilorin, Mr. Awoji David,  emphasized the importance of strategic collaboration among government agencies, academic institutions, and the private sector in advancing sustainable environmental management and building climate resilience.

The programme, which formed part of activities marking World Environment Day 2026, provided a valuable platform for stakeholders, academics, environmental professionals, and students to exchange ideas and discuss practical solutions to environmental challenges through sustainable waste management practices.

Ministry of Social Development, KW-IRS Conduct Monitoring, Evaluation and Enforcement on Creche Registration Compliance

The Kwara State Ministry of Social Development, in collaboration with the Kwara State Internal Revenue Service (KW-IRS), has conducted a two-day Monitoring, Evaluation and Enforcement Exercise on Crèche Registration Compliance across the Ilorin metropolis. The exercise, which took place from June 23 to 24, 2026, was aimed at ensuring compliance with crèche registration requirements among schools and childcare centres providing services for children between the ages of 0 and 6 years. Speaking on the exercise, the Honourable Commissioner for Social Development, Hajia Mariam Nnafatima Imam, PhD, stated that all operators of crèche facilities are required to register with the Ministry and renew their registration annually in accordance with the regulations. The Kwara State Government, in collaboration with International Vocational Technical and Entrepreneurship College, (IVTEC), Ajase Ipo, has  commenced batch 8 of the year 2024/2025 admission of Youths Empowerment and Employment Generation Scheme.  The Rector of the College, Engr.
