Kwara Trains Healthcare Providers on H-IUD to Expand Access to Modern Family Planning Services

The Kwara State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to improving reproductive health outcomes and expanding access to quality family planning services through the training of healthcare providers on the Hormonal Intrauterine Device (H-IUD).

H-IUD, is a modern contraceptive method designed to offer women safe, effective, and long-term family planning options.

The commitment was reiterated on Tuesday by the Commissioner for Health, Dr Amina Ahmed El-Imam, represented  by the Permanent Secretary, Dr Taoheed Abdullahi, at the opening ceremony of a five-day Hormonal Intrauterine Device training for service providers held at Monarch Hotel, Ilorin, capital of Kwara State.

The training was organised by EngenderHealth in collaboration with the Kwara State Ministry of Health and the Federal Ministry of Health.

Dr El-Imam described the Hormonal IUD as a significant advancement in reproductive health technology, explaining that the method addresses critical gaps in family planning services, especially for women who face challenges in accessing regular healthcare services, 

She added that the method also addresses critical area like adherence to daily contraceptive pills, or seeking reliable contraception while preserving future fertility options.

According to her, this aligns with Nigeria’s National Family Planning Communication Plan and supports the state’s efforts to reduce maternal mortality through increased access to modern contraceptive methods.

The Commissioner stated that the Kwara State Government, in partnership with the Federal Ministry of Health and development partners, had continued to prioritise reproductive health services through strategic investments and innovative programmes. 

She explained that the inclusion of the Hormonal IUD in the state’s family planning portfolio reflects the government’s determination to provide women with a broad range of safe, effective, and client-centred contraceptive choices.

She therefore,  appreciated the  Governor of Kwara State, Mallam AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, for his unwavering support and initiating programmes aimed at improving health and well-being of women and children.

While urging participants to maximise the opportunity presented by the intensive training programme, she emphasized that the knowledge and skills acquired would directly impact the quality of family planning services available to thousands of women across the state.

Dr El-Imam also reiterated the state’s commitment to empowering women, strengthening families, and improving health outcomes through expanded access to family planning services,  saying that the Hormonal IUD is a powerful tool for advancing these goals.

In his remarks, the Project Coordinator of EngenderHealth, Mr Ahmed Afolabi, commended Kwara State Government for providing an enabling environment for the delivery of family planning services. 

He appealed for the sustainability of ongoing interventions and the timely release of funds for the procurement of family planning commodities across healthcare facilities in the state.

Mr Afolabi disclosed that the 25 healthcare providers participating in the training would serve as facility champions and subsequently train five additional providers each in their respective facilities. 

According to him, this strategy is expected to increase the number of skilled Hormonal IUD providers to about 175 by the end of the year. 

He further stressed that continuous mentoring, supportive supervision, and follow-up training visits would be conducted by Master Trainers and the State Family Planning Coordinator.

He added that the Federal Ministry of Health and the National Primary Health Care Development Agency would participate in supervisory visits to ensure quality service delivery and certification of outstanding champions.

Also speaking, the representative of the Federal Ministry of Health, Mrs Stella Adebayo, lauded the Kwara State Government for establishing a budget line for family planning, describing it as a commendable step towards ensuring sustainability of reproductive health interventions. 

She urged participants to make effective use of the knowledge and skills acquired during the training for the benefit of women and families across the state. 

The opening ceremony was attended by the Executive Secretary of the Kwara State Primary Health Care Development Agency, Prof Nusirat Elelu, represented by the Director of Finance and Supply, Mr Ajide Olayioye, alongside other stakeholders in the health sector.

Ministry of Social Development, KW-IRS Conduct Monitoring, Evaluation and Enforcement on Creche Registration Compliance

The Kwara State Ministry of Social Development, in collaboration with the Kwara State Internal Revenue Service (KW-IRS), has conducted a two-day Monitoring, Evaluation and Enforcement Exercise on Crèche Registration Compliance across the Ilorin metropolis. The exercise, which took place from June 23 to 24, 2026, was aimed at ensuring compliance with crèche registration requirements among schools and childcare centres providing services for children between the ages of 0 and 6 years. The Kwara State Government, in collaboration with International Vocational Technical and Entrepreneurship College, (IVTEC), Ajase Ipo, has  commenced batch 8 of the year 2024/2025 admission of Youths Empowerment and Employment Generation Scheme.  The Rector of the College, Engr.
