Kwara Strengthens Family Planning Services with Hormonal IUD Training

The Kwara State Government has intensified efforts to improve access to quality family planning services with the training of selected healthcare providers on the provision of Hormonal Intrauterine Device (IUD) services and family planning data management.

The training, supported by the Kwara State Ministry of Health, brought together selected healthcare workers and relevant family planning personnel to strengthen their capacity, provide safe and effective hormonal IUD services across health facilities in the state.

Representing the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Amina Ahmed El-Imam, the Director of Public Health, Dr. Oluwatosin Fakayode, commended participants for their commitment to the training, noting that their attendance despite the public holiday demonstrated their dedication to improving healthcare delivery in Kwara.
Dr. El-Imam particularly highlighted the importance of male involvement in family planning, urging the male participants to become an advocate and champion for family planning among men in the community.

She explained that male involvement was critical, especially in a culturally sensitive environment, as men could help address misconceptions and encourage other men to support their partners in making informed family planning decisions.

According to her, the training was fully supported by the Kwara State Government as part of efforts to expand the availability of hormonal IUD services across health facilities.

She disclosed that a previous training supported by EngenderHealth had produced 25 trainers on hormonal IUD, adding that the state government had subsequently secured approval for additional trainers to expand the coverage of the service.

Dr. El-Imam urged participants to transfer the knowledge acquired to their respective facilities by orientating facility heads and other healthcare workers, stressing the need for proper documentation and practical application of the training.

She said the state government's vision was to make Kwara the best place to be born and the safest place for women to give birth, with family planning serving as one of the most cost-effective interventions for reducing maternal mortality.

“Every time when we have a review of maternal deaths, one thing that strikes me is that our system has failed a woman. Particularly when we have those women that are supposed to be on family planning and they are not,” She said.

She assured participants that the State Ministry of Health would continue to provide the necessary support for family planning services and would conduct supportive supervision visits to facilities to monitor the implementation of the training.

Earlier, the State Family Planning Coordinator, Hajia. Bashirat Jatto, said the training was designed to build the capacity of selected healthcare workers to provide hormonal IUD services.

She added that the training would also strengthen the capacity of the selected health  in family planning data management and the use of relevant reporting tools.

In a related development, Engender Health Organization led by its Project Coordinator, Mr. Afolabi Ahmed, presented the SISTER-U Device to the Ministry of Health as part of efforts to strengthen collaboration and support for family planning in the state.

These mannequins will enhance practical training, mentorship, and continuous capacity building of our healthcare providers, ultimately improving the quality of reproductive health services available to women across the state.

The training also included practical sessions to enhance participants’ competence in hormonal IUD service provision, with the expectation that the beneficiaries would return to their facilities as stronger family planning champions and contribute to improve access to quality reproductive health services across Kwara State.

Kwara State Government to begin In-Between Round Immunization Activity in 1,014 Settlements

The Kwara State Government, in collaboration with development partners, will commence the In-Between Round Immunization Activity (IBRA) across 1,014 settlements in 128 wards of the state from Thursday, July 2 to Sunday, July 5, 2026, as part of efforts to close immunity gaps and interrupt the transmission of poliovirus.
