Laerdal Global Health Commends Kwara’s Commitment to Safer Maternal and Newborn Care

The Country Director of Laerdal Global Health, Dr Obinna Orjingene, has commended the Kwara State Government for its sustained commitment to improving maternal and newborn health outcomes, particularly through evidence-based interventions and strategic partnerships.

Dr Orjingene stated this during a courtesy visit to the Kwara State Commissioner for Health, Dr Amina Ahmed El-Imam, where he acknowledged the state’s leadership in strengthening quality healthcare delivery and advancing initiatives targeted at reducing preventable maternal and newborn deaths.

The engagement further strengthened the partnership between the Kwara State Ministry of Health, Laerdal Global Health and other development partners supporting the state’s health sector reforms through the European Union-funded Strengthening Access to Reproductive and Adolescent Health (EU-SARAH) Project and the implementation of the Safer Birth Bundle of Care (SBBC).

As part of the visit, Dr Orjingene formally handed over project-supported tablets to the state to enhance digital data collection, monitoring, learning and continuous quality improvement under the programme.

In her response, the Commissioner for Health, Dr Amina Ahmed El-Imam, appreciated Laerdal Global Health and other partners for their continued support towards strengthening maternal and newborn healthcare in the state.

She reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to improving the quality of care available to women and newborns while ensuring that healthcare workers have the skills, tools and supportive environment required to deliver safe and respectful services.

El-Imam noted that strengthening maternal and newborn health requires sustained collaboration, effective use of data and continuous improvement at facility level, adding that the state would continue to work with partners to translate evidence into measurable health outcomes.

The partnership through the SBBC provides an opportunity for Kwara State to further institutionalize safer birth practices, strengthen healthcare workers’ competencies and improve the quality of services provided across participating facilities.

The Kwara State Government in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO), has commenced a three-day workshop to develop the State Health Promotion Strategic Framework Costed Implementation Plan aimed at strengthening health promotion interventions and improving public health outcomes across the state. Kwara State Government to begin In-Between Round Immunization Activity in 1,014 Settlements

The Kwara State Government, in collaboration with development partners, will commence the In-Between Round Immunization Activity (IBRA) across 1,014 settlements in 128 wards of the state from Thursday, July 2 to Sunday, July 5, 2026, as part of efforts to close immunity gaps and interrupt the transmission of poliovirus. The Executive Secretary of the Kwara State Primary Health Care Development Agency (KWSPHCDA), Professor Nusirat Elelu, disclosed this in a press statement issued on Wednesday from her office along Fate Road, Ilorin.
