KWSG Reaffirms Support for Kidnap Victims Rescued in Woro as UNICEF Distributes Intervention Materials

The Kwara State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the rescued residents of Woro community in Kaiama Local Government Area. 

As part of its sustained collaboration with development partners and humanitarian organisations, including UNICEF, the government, in collaboration with the Kwara State Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency (RUWASSA), distributed intervention materials to the beneficiaries in Ilorin.

The intervention programme, held in Ilorin, brought together representatives of the Kwara State Government, UNICEF, RUWASSA, the Ministry of Health, the World Health Organisation, WHO, and E-health Africa, among other stakeholders, to provide immediate support and help improve the wellbeing of the rescued persons from Woro community.
Speaking on the intervention, the Commissioner for Water Resources, Hon. Yinusa Lade conveyed the appreciation of the Kwara State Government to UNICEF for its compassion and commitment towards supporting vulnerable people, describing the intervention as an act of service that would yield lasting benefits for the beneficiaries and the state.

Represented by the Director of Personnel, Finance and Supply in the Ministry, Mr Bamidele Ajeje, the Commissioner noted that the support provided by UNICEF was not merely about the materials being presented but also about restoring dignity, strengthening hope and reducing the difficulties faced by the rescued persons, stressing that everything UNICEF was doing for the people was ultimately an act of service to humanity and to God.

He assured the gathering that the Kwara State Government would ensure the intervention materials reached the intended beneficiaries appropriately and would be distributed according to the identified needs, while emphasising that the government would continue to provide the necessary support and coordination for interventions aimed at improving the lives of vulnerable residents.
The Commissioner for Health, Dr Amina Ahmed El-Imam who was representated by the Director of Primary Healthcare, Dr Oguntoye Michael, commended the Kwara State Government for creating an enabling environment for UNICEF and other development partners to support the people of the state.

Dr Oguntoye described UNICEF as a dependable partner that had remained with Kwara State through difficult and favourable periods, noting that the organisation had consistently supported the state with service provision, technical assistance and interventions that contributed to the wellbeing of women, children and vulnerable populations.

He said the state was grateful for the partnership and expressed the desire for greater collaboration and additional interventions in the future, stressing that the needs of vulnerable communities remained enormous and required collective action by government, development partners and other stakeholders.

Earlier in his welcome address, the General Manager of RUWASSA; Mr Olorunfemi Oladipo, had expressed appreciation to UNICEF for the continued partnership with the agency and the Kwara State Government in addressing the immediate and long-term needs of vulnerable communities.

Mr Oladipo said the intervention demonstrated the importance of strong partnerships in responding to humanitarian needs and improving access to essential services, adding that RUWASSA remained committed to working with UNICEF and other stakeholders to ensure that WASH, health, nutrition and dignity-related interventions reached the people who needed them most

In her remarks, the UNICEF WASH Specialist; Mrs Theresa Pamma, said the intervention should not be viewed only as an emergency response but as a deliberate effort to reduce the burden on both the Kwara State Government and the beneficiaries while supporting the rescued persons to regain stability and get back on their feet.

Mrs Pamma disclosed that the intervention comprised 200 kits, four cartons of F75 therapeutic food, 30 Mama Kits and 197 dignity kits, explaining that the materials were carefully provided to respond to some of the immediate needs of the affected residents. 

She said UNICEF remained committed to supporting government efforts and working with relevant stakeholders to ensure that vulnerable people received appropriate assistance, protection and essential services while they worked towards rebuilding their lives.

The WHO Kwara State Coordinator, Dr Eyitayo Emmanuel, appreciated UNICEF for maintaining close contact with the Kwara State Government in promoting the wellbeing of the rescued people of Woro community and commended the organisation for responding to the needs of the affected residents. 

Dr Eyitayo emphasised the importance of coordinated interventions involving government agencies, UNICEF, WHO and other partners, noting that effective collaboration would strengthen health, nutrition, WASH and protection services for vulnerable people and ensure that no affected person was left behind.

Also present at the programme were the Acting Director of Water Engineering, Engr Hajarat Aremu, the Press Secretary to the Ministry of Water Resources, Mallam Adamu Muhammed Saidu, the RUWASSA Head of Sanitation and Hygiene, Mr Abdulazeez Olalekan Rufai, Sanitarian Idris Zubair and the RUWASSA Press Secretary, Mrs Afolabi Temple.

The UNICEF delegation includes: the Nutrition Specialist, Mrs Chinwe Ezeife; Education Officer, Mr Bala Dada; Team Lead for Health and Health Specialist, Dr Mrs Adisa Iyal; Health Specialist, Dr Ahmed Tsofo; Child Protection Specialist, Dr Wilfred Mamah, and Administrative Officer, Mr Tope Gbayero.

Representatives of the Ministry of Health at the event includes the Director of Primary Healthcare, Dr Oguntoye Michael, and the Kwara State Nutrition Officer, Dr Gbenga Bankole, while WHO was represented by its Kwara State Coordinator, Dr Eyitayo Emmanuel, and Public Health Consultant, Dr Oluwabunmi Ajayi.

E-health Africa was represented by its Associate Project Manager, Mr Friday Daniel, while the presence of representatives from the various institutions underscored the collective commitment of stakeholders to strengthening support for the rescued people and promoting their recovery, dignity and wellbeing.

Highlight of the event was the presentation and distribution of the intervention materials to the identified beneficiaries, with stakeholders expressing optimism that the support would provide meaningful relief, reduce immediate vulnerabilities and complement the efforts of the Kwara State Government in helping the rescued people of Woro community rebuild their lives.

Kwara State Government to begin In-Between Round Immunization Activity in 1,014 Settlements

The Kwara State Government, in collaboration with development partners, will commence the In-Between Round Immunization Activity (IBRA) across 1,014 settlements in 128 wards of the state from Thursday, July 2 to Sunday, July 5, 2026, as part of efforts to close immunity gaps and interrupt the transmission of poliovirus.
