KW-HMB Engages Drug Vendors to Sustain Improved Medicine Supply in State Hospitals

The Kwara State Hospitals Management Board (KW-HMB) has met with pharmaceutical drug vendors as part of efforts to sustain the availability and affordability of essential medicines and consumables across state-owned hospitals.

The strategic meeting, which brought together representatives of major pharmaceutical companies, focused on strengthening collaboration with suppliers, improving the drug supply chain and ensuring uninterrupted access to essential medicines and consumables for patients in government hospitals.

Speaking during the meeting, held at the Ministry of Health Conference Room yesterday, the Executive Secretary of the KW-HMB, Dr. Abdulraheem Malik, commended the participating pharmaceutical companies for their continued support towards ensuring steady supplies of medicines and consumables across the state’s hospitals.

Dr. Malik said the Kwara State Government, under the leadership of Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, had taken deliberate steps to strengthen the financial independence and operational efficiency of the Essential Drugs Programme (EDP). This is the reason we are able to pay for drugs and consumables supplied at regular intervals. 

He disclosed that the Governor had given approval for the expedited payment of drug vendors, a move he said would enable the EDP to meet its financial obligations to suppliers more promptly.

He assured the vendors that the government remained committed to settling its obligations for products supplied to the EDP, urging them to continue supporting the state’s healthcare system.

“Whatever product you supply to the Essential Drug Programme, we will ensure that it is paid for. We want to build a system where suppliers can have confidence in doing business with us.”

The KW-HMB boss also appealed to pharmaceutical vendors to consider offering competitive prices and concessions to the EDP, stressing that affordable medicines would encourage patients to patronise hospital pharmacies.

“If the price of drugs in our hospitals is higher than what patients can get from pharmacies outside, they will naturally prefer to buy outside. We therefore appeal to our suppliers to give EDP competitive prices so that the medicines can remain affordable to our patients.”

He emphasised that a strong and reliable drug supply chain was critical to effective healthcare delivery and the ability of state hospitals to meet patients’ needs.

In her welcome remarks, the Project Manager of the EDP, Pharm. Lovette Oladele, appreciated the pharmaceutical companies for their continued contributions to healthcare delivery in Kwara State.

She said the meeting was aimed at strengthening the relationship between the EDP and its suppliers, addressing existing challenges and developing a more efficient and sustainable system for the procurement and distribution of essential medicines.

Also speaking, Pharm. Isaac Salami, representing Sam Pharmaceutical Company, commended the KW-HMB and EDP for the progress recorded in their operations, noting that the current situation represented a significant improvement compared with previous years.

He expressed optimism that sustained collaboration between the EDP and pharmaceutical suppliers would lead to further improvements in medicine availability across the state.

Similarly, Mr. Ikhile Osahon, representing May & Baker PLC, commended the HMB and EDP for maintaining close engagement with pharmaceutical suppliers.

He said such collaboration was essential to ensuring that medicines remained consistently available across state hospitals.

Mr. Ayomide Faloye, representing Fidson Healthcare, also acknowledged the efforts of the HMB and EDP, particularly their commitment to addressing suppliers’ concerns and making timely payment a priority.

The meeting reaffirmed the commitment of the KW-HMB, EDP and pharmaceutical suppliers to strengthening the medicine supply chain and ensuring sustained access to affordable and quality essential medicines in state hospitals across Kwara State.

Kwara State Government to begin In-Between Round Immunization Activity in 1,014 Settlements

The Kwara State Government, in collaboration with development partners, will commence the In-Between Round Immunization Activity (IBRA) across 1,014 settlements in 128 wards of the state from Thursday, July 2 to Sunday, July 5, 2026, as part of efforts to close immunity gaps and interrupt the transmission of poliovirus.
