KWSG Inaugurates Committee on Emergency Medical Treatment

In a renewed effort at improving health outcomes, with the aim of reducing preventable deaths, in underserved and rural communities, Kwara State Government has inaugurated the State Emergency Medical Treatment Committee (SEMTC), in the state, with immediate effect.

The inauguration ceremony, which took place over the weekend was performed by the state Commissioner for Health, Dr. Amina Ahmed El-Imam, at the Ministry of Health Headquarters, Fate, Ilorin, the state capital. 

Inaugurating the committee, the Commissioner stated that formation of the committee was long overdue, therefore called for collective commitments, to ensure it delivers tangible and impactful results.

“The selection of members was based on merit and their respective institutional roles. We expect this to be reflected in their service delivery and dedication,” El-Imam stated further.

“Nigeria continues to record unacceptably high rates of preventable deaths, largely due to poor access to emergency medical services, particularly in rural communities. We are working assiduously to reverse this trend in Kwara State.

"The committee will play a critical role in addressing existing gaps in emergency healthcare, with a special focus on pregnant women, newborn and residents of low-income earnings or hard to reach areas.

“The primary goal is to drive demand and improve access to quality, efficient, and effective emergency medical services across the state. We are particularly prioritizing maternal and neonatal care in economically disadvantaged settings,” she added.

In his remarks, Chairman of the newly inaugurated Committee, Dr. Stephen Arigidi, expressed gratitude for the confidence reposed in them, with an assurance that the committee will deliver on its mandate.

According to him; “We are fully committed to the delivery of timely, efficient and high-quality emergency medical services across the state. This is not just a mandate, it is a call to service,” Dr. Arigidi affirmed.

The multi sectoral SEMTC Members were drawn from the State Blood Transfusion Agency, Primary Healthcare Development Agency and Kwara Health Insurance Agency.

Others are; Guild of Medical Directors, State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Nigeria Police Force, Federal Fire Service and the Media among others.
